A Note from the Founder - Our Story
Most stroke survivors and their caregiver partners think from their personal experience, stroke recovery ends when reimbursed therapy terminates. That's a DARN shame because as others, and I, personally have experienced - progress can continue for many years if YOU have the determination, knowledge, and a Roadmap to Success.
And that is the mission of Stroke Recovery Foundation - to dramatically improve post-stroke outcomes and lifestyles in SW Florida and across America. To give survivors and their caregiver partners the realistic hope, the intellectual tools, encouragement and support as they embark on their recovery journey's.
We also have a focus on stroke prevention, which means creating awareness of stroke risk factors and how to mitigate them, understanding the signs of stroke and what steps to take if stroke signs show themselves, particularly second strokes.
Bob Mandell speaking with Sir Professor Bruce Keough, Medical Director for NHS England at the UK Stroke Forum
Writing Stroke Victor, I learned of the massively underserved stroke population which numbers in the millions in the US. This has resulted in substantial unrealized recovery potential. Something REALLY BIG had to be done.
With that knowledge, I founded the Stroke Recovery Foundation and then undertook an international search to see what was working in other geographies. I spoke with stroke professionals, researchers, doctors, therapists, survivors, and their caregivers.
Essential point from a survivor perspective - Big Time stroke recovery education is required - in language which survivors like me, and their caregivers can understand and act upon! By knowing what’s available, and possible, stroke recovery can be extended and therefore post-stroke lifestyles can be improved.
Our Medical Advisory Council is growing as we recruit healthcare professionals to address the many lifestyle and medical factors associated with stroke recovery and prevention. Each member understands the importance of this work and is volunteering their talents to help create Succeeding in Your Stroke Recovery.
If you are a medical professional with helpful knowledge and experience with stroke recovery and prevention you are invited to contact me to discuss how you can make a difference.
We need your ideas, and your financial support so that we can continue this life changing initiative which can help so many, and perhaps EVEN YOU.
