The holidays are upon us! Apples are plentiful and fresh. So, I thought to share my super easy apple sauce recipe. Apple sauce is fat-free, very tasty, natural and also heart-healthy. Good, good and great!
Apple sauce is a great food for stroke recovery and prevention because it is tasty, no-fat and easy to eat. It stands on its own or as a complement to many dishes such as barbeque and pork. We had a barbeque party this weekend and everyone loved the apple sauce.
A bit of my history – in the late summer and fall when I was a child, (this goes way back) I would pick apples off trees which grew wildly in Connecticut where we had a modest summer cottage. Then my grandmother would make her apple sauce. It made the house smell great and I loved it!
Skipping forward, before I had my stroke, I would also make my grandmother’s apple sauce, though I bought the apples. I would cut and then boil them in apple juice. Then once the apples were soft, I would grind the apples through my grandmother’s folly food mill which besides breaking down the apples separated their skins and cores. It was fairly time consuming and quite a lot of work. My new wife, Debbie, loved the apple sauce I made and took it for her lunch.
This is today, and now that I have had a stroke, I found an easier way to make homemade Apple Sauce without the folly food mill and all the time.
My today recipe starts unexcitedly but stay with me!
Purchase good bottled apple sauce, and very important – which is unsweetened. Look at the ingredients – there should be apples and perhaps, apple juice, and that’s it.
Trader Joe’s has it on its shelves and Motts also makes unsweetened apple sauce. Publics, down here in Florida also sells unsweetened apple sauce.

Empty the jar into a bowl and put your own fresh ingredients in as follows:
- 1 24 oz jar apple sauce
- ½ cup light brown sugar
- ½ tsp of cinnamon
- A pinch of ground cloves
Thoroughly mix all ingredients and then taste the result. Depending on the apples used and your taste – add sugar and/or a bit more cinnamon or cloves to taste. You could also add raisins.
Refrigerate for at least a few hours and then bring to room temperature. Mix again with a soup spoon.
You can chill or warm the apple sauce before serving – it’s yours, it’s easy and No-Fat!
Now you may not believe it, but at our barbeque party everyone raved about the sauce and thought it was completely fresh. The fresh sugar and spices (and no corn syrup) do the trick.
Important note: (You don’t have to have had a stroke or be a caregiver to love this dish. Working mom’s (and Dad’s) with little time to cook can love it also.)
